Karnali River

Better than Trekking

This is our favorite long rafting and kayaking trip in Nepal.

Avoid the roads now seen on the Sun Kosi, avoid the trek to the the Tamur and just enter into another remote world.  This river truly is a Trip of a Lifetime.  Considered as Nepal's biggest and mightiest River, The Karnali lies in the country's Wild West, which is more recently opened to tourism than many of Nepal's other rivers.  Getting here is all part of the adventure; a long rugged day/night bus trip is required to reach our starting point, but the rafting that follows is well worth the effort.   A short flight can elevate many of the hours or we also have some great ideas to break up the journey like add a visit to Bardia National Park or Lumbini, the birthplace of Buddha.  The any Karnali river rafting is guaranteed to be a white water epic journey that you will never forget.

The river begins its life near to Tibet's holy Mount Kailash. It carves its way through the Tibetan plateau and through the Himalayas into Nepal's lush western forests. After the snow melt this river becomes a raging torrent with huge rapids which offers brilliant rafting and kayaking. A highlight is the 7km long gorge which is one long raging rapid that sucks you in one end and spits you out the other (in one piece). This is one of the Nepal's must do rivers.
Not only is the river a gem for its white water, but it's course travels through a relatively unpopulated area, filled with pristine jungle and you will have good chances of viewing the abundant wildlife like Deer, Leopards, jackals, mongoose, and monkeys.  Spotting the wildlife is another matter though.  This is by far an Adrenaline Rush Nepal favorite.

Rafting and Kayaking the Karnali River Nepal

Expect continuous white water and rapids on the first half of the river  that make this a brilliant rafting trip. The river passes through some deep canyons packed with excellent rapids during the first few days.   Despite this depending on water volume, it's a trip for Paddlers of all levels.  The Karnali is a sensational river for the experienced kayaker with plenty of big rapids, surfing waves and well defined eddies.  Most of the action is packed into the upper half of the river, with the lower section requiring some paddling on flatter section but still moving water.   It is an amazing kayak or raft trip in Nepal.  We like to think some of the best rafting and kayaking Nepal has to offer.
